As I touched on in the introduction to this review, the Turbo Vado 3 X feels polished, refined, and seriously premium. This feel extends to nearly all areas of its ride quality, though the bike is not without some areas that could be improved.
Specialized makes the Vado 3 X in four sizes accommodating riders from 5’1″ to 6’4″, and fit something the brand consistently gets right. I tested the large frame, and at 5’11”, the sizing felt spot-on. Its geometry and handlebars put me at a slightly forward lean that felt athletic while still being comfortable.
I appreciated that the seatpost provided plenty of height to get full leg extension; this kind of e-bike is where pedaling efficiency matters. I wanted to be able to push into the pedals and feel the bike’s power in response—and I was not disappointed in the slightest.
The model we tested included a dropper seatpost, operated by a lever on the left handlebar. In urban environments, it allowed me to set my feet flat on the ground when stopped, but it’s also useful when adventuring. As with an eMTB, the dropper post allowed me to get the saddle out of the way so I could move my weight back when descending steep slopes. Both functions made it easy to appreciate.
In terms of contact points, the ergonomically swept-back handlebars and rubber grips felt generally comfortable. The sport saddle was well-matched for the bike’s versatility, though it could feel a bit firm at the end of long rides. The bike comes with platform pedals with grip tape, which I recommend swapping to studded aluminum pedals before leaving the pavement.
I greatly enjoyed the comfort provided by the Vado 3 X’s full suspension, which is a rarity on similar e-bikes. Our test bike included a RockShox Psylo fork with a plush 130mm of travel and the RockShox Deluxe Select shock that offered 120mm in the rear. Combined with the powerful, responsive motor, they help make the bike the all-terrain machine that it is.
The 27.5 x 2.6″ Specialized Hemisphere tires split the difference between pavement and dirt with a light knobby tread. On hard-packed trails they gripped decently, though they lost some traction on looser terrain. On pavement, I sometimes felt like I’d prefer something with more grip and support; I’d personally lean toward a chunkier off-road tire given how capable the rest of the bike is.
As I touched on in the Speed Test section above, the bike may weigh 72 lbs, but its heft is distributed well enough that it feels agile and maneuverable. Steering is quick and predictable, and I never found myself fighting the bike’s mass through corners or when riding uphill.
When it comes to the user interface, the stem-integrated touchscreen is clean, functional, and appealing. The Specialized app extends the experience further with motor tuning, ride data tracking/sharing with third-party apps, optional battery life extension options and ride modes, and a security package with a keyless lock, PIN protection, and Apple Find My connectivity.
My one real frustration is the lack of adjustability when it comes to the fork and handlebars. The stem and handlebar are a single-piece assembly, which looks remarkably polished with the integrated display, but rules out swapping to different bars. Spacers allow some handlebar height adjustments, but not much.
Similarly, the RockShox Psylo fork on our test bike offered no compression adjustment, which may present a problem for larger and heavier riders. In both cases, a more customizable setup seems like a fair ask—especially considering the bike’s premium price point.
I tested the bike on our local network of paved, shared-use paths—but also on a series of rocky dirt roads and dirt paths often enjoyed by motocross riders. There, the Turbo Vado 3 X 5.0 handled itself confidently, maintaining comfort and traction as I romped around and pushed the bike beyond the limits of most similar bikes I’ve reviewed.
Overall, I was highly impressed with how well the Vado 3 X rode. It’s clear to me that the bike truly lived up to its goal, with the ability to cover daily commuting and much rougher off-road riding without feeling like a compromise in either direction.
